If a straight couple is being really lovey dovey and someone used gay to describe them I wouldn't get on their case. The same applies for cheesy poems. I think the word 'gay' has developed different meanings and some of them are ok to use. Calling bad or stupid things gay I really don't like though.
I… have never heard of anyone calling a lovey-dovey straight couple gay as in cheesy. In fact, I’ve never heard of anyone using gay as a synonym for cheesy.
It’s certainly less offensive to me than using it as a synonym for “bad” or “stupid,” but cheesy has a negative connotation and I don’t like it.
Gay has two meanings: happy and homosexual. And because of the meanings people are trying to imbue, I am wary of accepting anything else.
